Tips For Maintaining Your New Motorcycle

You just purchased a new motorcycle and now you won't need to do any maintenance on it for months - right? No, that's the wrong move to make. From the very first day that you purchase a new motorcycle you need to take steps to properly maintain it. Here are some tips for making sure your new motorcycle stays in tip top shape.

First, keep a constant watch on your tire pressure. In fact, you may want to stash a small pocket gauge somewhere on your person or motorcycle so that you will always have it quickly at hand. Try to make it a habit to check your tire pressure each and every time you put gas in your car.

Having your tires properly inflated are very important, otherwise you risk possibly having a dangerous blow out or an inconvenient flat while you are out riding. Not to mention that having properly inflated tires also help optimize your fuel and will save you some gas money as well.

Next, regularly check both your brake pads and your brake fluid. Not having fluid can cause your brakes to malfunction, risking a serious injury. Similarly, if your brake pads are worn down they will not work effectively either. These two things do not take long to check, but you will want to make sure you do this regularly and not forget. If you think you may forget, you may want to set aside one day each month that you check such things and mark it on your calendar for the upcoming months.

Although this may be obvious, you need to keep your eye on your oil level as well. If your motorcycle doesn't have oil, it won't work. It's that simple. To optimize the performance and the life of your motorcycle, you will want to change your oil filters regularly as well.

Finally, if you experience even a small collision, make sure you have your motorcycle fully checked out before you ride it again. This is not only to make sure you are safe, but also to protect its future value as well. Even minor paint scrapes can start to rust if they are not repaired soon.

Probably one of the best things you can do to make sure you keep your motorcycle well maintained is to create a monthly check list of all the items you need to check and then be sure that you follow through. Just a little time each month can make your ride much safer, economical and make sure your motorcycle looks and rides good for years to come.
