The standard reading should be no more than 1/32 of an inch of 0.8 millimeters. Check the groove depth to ensure that it is not abnormally low.

4. The penny test: Perhaps one of the oldest tricks in the book is to use a penny. A poor tread will make it easy for foreign objects such as pins to penetrate the tire. You need to stick a penny in the grove. If the face is too high then you should get a new tire. Where the bust is exposed then you should make the replacement as a matter of urgency.
