Contrary to what the title suggests, this article is more of an expression of personal opinions than a technical diatribe. What you are about to read is based on years of experience riding motorcycles combined with a sound scientific background. Over the past decade, I have owned several cars and motorcycles; but here's the fundamental difference between the two: A four-wheeler takes you where you need to go - a two-wheeler takes you where you want to go. Nothing says 'I own my life' better than slicing through air at 160 mph. You are at odds with the whole universe -- and winning. It brings us to grips with inherent human frailties, and that, in turn, makes us aware of what we stand to lose.

It is, however, often ignored that this 'ecstasy on wheels' comprises of thousands of moving parts, each one essential to our safety during the ride. Motorcycle fairing is one of the most critical parts of your crotch-rocket. As a matter of fact, it is so critical that I think it's probably the only thing that distinguishes a modern superbike from the metal chunks of the yesteryears. You may remember the first and second-generation CB900F from Honda. They were pretty good machines with brilliant engines; but not exactly a 'dream come true' for a motorcycle enthusiast. They lacked full, sometimes even partial, fairings, and were terrible at higher speeds. Turbulence at high speeds made them dangerous to ride and affected their maneuverability.

All of that, however, changed with the introduction of full fairings. The concept of 'fairing' was borrowed from the aviation industry where fairings were used to smoothen up the outline for the purpose of reducing drag and increasing aerodynamicity. Fairings consolidate the ride and the rider into a single unit resulting in streamlined airflow. Apart from the obvious performance advantage, fairings give motorcycles a menacing, hawk-like look. Add to it a custom paint-job and you have a ride worth identifying with!

What happens when you need to give your crotch-rocket a new look? It can be very confusing and frustrating because customization ends only where your budget does. There is no limit to what you can do to your motorcycle to make it go faster and look more dashing. So where do we draw the line? What kinds of fairings give you the best value for money? One thing is for sure! OEM fairings are not easy on your wallet. They may cost up to 30% of the motorcycle itself which is just way too expensive. It is also worthwhile to mention that even the OEM fairings are manufactured using the Injection mold technology so there is no point in spending a large sum of money just to have an international motorcycle manufacturer's name printed on it. Aftermarket fairings are available in the color of your choice or you can have the vendor design it in the way you prefer.

Motorcycle Safety Importance

I recall that during my teenage years, it was my fantasy to own a bike. Eventually I achieved an old bike from a far relative and showed off on the streets. This has stopped one day, when a reckless car driver, crashed my bike, while it was parking along the pavement. This was my first total loss...

Now days, while I am a father of a teenager, I face a different fantasy. Well, not my own fantasy. My son has decided that he needs a motorcycle, not a bike. This vehicle is way dangerous than bikes. I do recognize that people, grownups as well as teenagers, all over the world are using motorcycles, and are proud of that. Not once have I watched those riders cruise the roads and the highways all over Europe and USA, while I was driving securely in my air-conditioned business rented car.

Yet, I cannot forget one real scene I have witnessed long ago, while I was about 20 year old. I was crossing a very busy crossroad, positioning myself at a place to catch a lift to my destination. No more than 2 minutes had passed, and a horror scene took place in front of my eyes. Two young boys were riding their motorcycle, and a hasty car crashed into them. From my position I have witnessed two bodies flying high above the other cars, like two rocks, and launching heavily on the hard road, about 20 meters away. Yelling and shouting started immediately. A first aid ambulance appeared from nowhere and the two guys were taken from the site to the hospital, along with me, while I was stretching one of the guys' leg in order to keep his knee from total cracking ( as I was instructed by a the therapist). The ride to the hospital lasted for ages, although it was only 3 Km away.

Since that instance, I lost confidence in the two-wheel vehicle whatsoever, specifically motorcycles.

Now, since I cannot stop my son from riding such a dangerous vehicle, I had to examine the safety measurements that need to be takes. I am not a biker of course but I do know that there are some imperative elements that must be used by motorcycle riders.

First, you must use a good helmet. In some countries this is enforced by law. Helmet is the main and he most important protection a rider must be equipped with. Head and face injuries might be lethal, and a good helmet may be the slight difference between life and death. Do not compromise about that.

Appropriate clothes are needed, including gloves. Elbow and knee protectors are needed for avoiding dangerous injuries. Still, comfort of the rider is important. Comfort of the driver enables him to drive at ease and pay attention to danger. Also, a good jacket provides warmth, protection from rain, and provides some physical protection too.

And last, you always can use a good injury insurance that can help you cover anything. At least this is what I am going to force my son to do.

Why Won't It Start?

You love your motorcycle until the day you don't. That day will come right after you crash a motorcycle badly or when you are already running late and the bike won't start. You'll kick and curse and quickly recap every unjust act that has ever happened to you when you were on the bike. Afterwards, you'll sit on the curb, stare at the bike's battle scars, a dented gas tank from that trip to Mexico and worn tires and think, "I love this bike because of these reasons not despite them." But you are still late and the bike still isn't starting, so start by checking the obvious.

If the bike sputtered, spit and coughed before giving up, open the gas tank and check for fuel. While you are at it, check your fuel petcock to ensure it is in the "On" or "Reserve" position. These only take a minute to do and allow you to move forward with your diagnosis. If the bike doesn't even try to spin we need to investigate possible electrical problems. Put the bike in neutral, make sure the kickstand is up, and the clutch is pulled in and try to start the bike. If the bike still refuses to start we remove the rider's seat and check the battery.

Are the battery terminals secured and corrosion-free? Check to see that the battery has at least 12.6 volts, if not, charge the battery and retest. Follow the ground cable (black) to where it grounds to the bike. Is this ground secured and corrosion-free? If the bike still doesn't start, follow the positive cable (red) to the main fuse and check to see this fuse is intact, if not, replace it. Inspect the fuse box to make sure there are no fuses that have burnt out and are causing an open circuit.

If you are still unable to start the bike, start by laying a screwdriver across the starting relay, located near the main fuse. The screwdriver will jump electricity across the starter relay and will force the bike to start. If the starter isn't even turning then you will have to address the electrical problem first. If the starter is spinning but the engine isn't catching you could have a problem with the engine not getting fuel or not getting spark. Spray starter fluid into the air box to see if the engine catches. If so, the problem is likely fuel delivery but if the problem persists check to make sure your engine has spark. If you don't feel comfortable jumping the starter relay, consider spraying some starter fluid into the bike's air box and push-start the bike. Arm yourself with the ability to separate cause and effect and you will be able to start your bike even on the days you can't.

I had the opportunity to meet some of the world's great motorcycle adventurers recently, and the really interesting thing was just how much they are like everyone else. The difference is that whereas we all dream, they have acted on their dreams.

I was down in Amado, AZ, at the Overland Expo, which is a gathering intended to bring people who dream about adventure touring together with people who do it, and with vendors who make products geared specifically for this type of excursion. The place was packed.

Adventure touring, or overlanding as they call it, is said to be the fastest growing niche in motorcycling, with popular models being the Kawasaki KLR650, the Suzuki DR-Z400, the Yamaha WR450F, among others. Unlike road touring, big power is not the people doing these rides look for first. In fact, as a simple rule of thumb you can ponder this adage: If you can't pick it up by yourself it's not an adventure motorcycle.
To listen to some of these people tell their stories of their adventures is both inspiring and daunting. There was Ted Simon, who wrote Jupiter's Travels about his four-year ride around the world. Also Lois Pryce, whose ride from Alaska to the tip of South America is recounted in her book Lois on the Loose, and whose trip from England to Cape Town, South Africa, is told in Red Tape and White Knuckles. Both those rides were on 250cc Yamaha machines. And there were others.

It wasn't just the distances they covered, but also the seemingly insurmountable problems they somehow surmounted and incredible struggles their journeys at times required. Not to mention outright dangers, ranging from passing through countries at war to running out of gas in the middle of the Sahara Desert with nobody else around for miles to being jailed by local "authorities" intent on separating you from your cash. How many among us have the gumption to push a heavily laden motorcycle through miles of knee-deep mud or ride a road that rains have turned into a river through an area where anything off the road holds the potential of triggering land mines?

Fortunately, it isn't necessary to risk your life in order to go adventuring on your motorcycle. The people who write the books are the ones who have gone to extremes. For the rest of us who aren't as hard core, all it really takes is to take a week's vacation and go ride somewhere you've never been before. Sure it still takes preparation. If you've never ridden a that KLR 650 on goat trails you had best get some practice before setting off on a seven-day ride through the Rocky Mountains. You'd also better talk to some people who have done these things before about the right kind of tents, sleeping bags, and other gear you'll need.

But in the end it's all about challenging yourself. Challenging yourself to make the commitment to go, to do the necessary research and preparation, and then to actually ride the ride. Many people shake their heads and tell themselves they just can't do these kinds of things: They have jobs, families, commitments. They don't have the money for the bikes and gear or they can't take the time off.

These are valid concerns but one common theme cropped up again and again at the expo: If you really want to do this kind of adventuring you will organize your life to make it possible. Do you really need a 5,000-square-foot house when a 2,000-square-foot house would free up enough money to buy the bike and the gear and leave you with a much smaller mortgage that would then free up more money for more trips? In short, it's priorities. Do you have real dreams, or are they fantasies? Real dreams really can come true, but you are the one who has to make that happen.

Perfecting Motorcycle Riding

The racetrack isn't the place to learn to stop. Track days are expensive, time-consuming events that happen only a few times a year but you can ride around an empty or abandoned parking lot for free nearly any day of the year. Save yourself time and money by practicing your braking and steering inputs in a parking lot so you can spend your track time working on high-speed maneuvering. All you will need is an empty parking lot that is free from gravel and oil, a measuring tape, an hour of your time and some cones or chalk or some other way of marking the ground.

Measure out 10-feet and mark both ends of the line with a cone or chalk and draw a circle around the line. Measure another 10-foot line that touches the edge of the previous circle and mark the ends of the line with a cone or chalk and draw a circle around the line. You should have two 10-foot circles side by side. Begin riding around the first circle at 15 mph. You should be looking at the other end of the circle as you spin around the circle. Try increasing your speed slightly. Does the bike feel more or less stable at higher speeds? Change your body position so that the bike is leaned over but you are sitting upright with your weight resting on the outside foot peg. Does the bike feel more or less stable the farther the bike is pitched over and the more upright you sit?

Move on to trying a figure 8 by riding clockwise around one circle and counter-clockwise around the other circle. This will help you ride with your feet light on your toes to aid how well you transition from one side to the other. Now we move on to practicing braking. Draw a chalk line and mark a line off every six inches behind that line for 4 feet. Ride at 25 mph with our heads looking up at the horizon and our peripheral vision searching for the line.

As we approach the line we apply the front and rear brakes and stop in as little time as possible. Did you keep your head up, staring at the horizon the whole time? If not repeat the process until you feel comfortable looking off at the horizon even as the bike dips forward under heavy braking. Notice how and where your tire finally came to a stop. Repeat this drill until your can reduce the amount of space it takes you to go from 25 mph to a controlled stop. Try applying more or less front and rear brakes until you feel the tires start to go into a slide. This is the upper threshold of your braking and a parking lot, not racetrack, is the best place to learn to stop better.

Motorcycle, ATV and Scooter keys are all pretty similar from a locksmith's point of view. Usually, all the locks on a motorcycle use the same key, unless one has been replaced, most often, the gas cap. When motorcycle keys are lost, one of the big challenges for a locksmith is finding the correct keyblank. There seem to be almost as many keyblanks as models of motorcycles! It can be frustrating to a locksmith, as many of our reference materials contradict each other, or information on a particular make, model and year is simply missing altogether. I have even seen cases where the same make, model and year have completely different locking systems and keyblanks. Motorcycle manufacturers are not as disciplined as automobile manufacturers, and they often use last years locks until they run out of them. Also, since the locks on motorcycles are easy to get at, they are more often replaced than automotive locks.

This often causes a great deal of trouble for the locksmith who must assume all the locks work on the same key. However, motorcycles tend to have many locks and the locksmith often has his or her choice of which lock they think will be easier to work on. Helmet locks, fork locks, ignition locks, seat locks, gas cap locks, cargo locks and more can be had by the skilled locksmith. I usually go for the gas cap lock or the ignition lock. The gas cap, because it is easy to get to, the ignition lock because it is usually what people REALLY want a key for! Often, when I make a key for the gas cap, it works in all the locks and I am done. Sometimes, it doesn't work in anything else, which suggests the gas cap was replaced. In that case, I go for the ignition!

Many techniques can be utilized to generate a new key for a motorcycle. Impressioning is a technique where you use a blank key, you wiggle it around in the lock, the tumblers or wafers makes tiny marks on the key, you file those marks and repeat until the key turns the lock. This technique is one of the higher skills in locksmithing and I use it on motorcycles quite often. You can also read the wafers, using a small otoscope (the kind the doctor looks in your ears with) you look down the key hole or keyway and from that you can estimate the shape or cuts of the key. Impressioning is often used to further fine tune the correct key. Sometimes there is a code stamped on the lock casing, in this case, I can use that code to get the information I need to cut a new key. At no point is a "mold" made of the lock, I get that question quite frequently! Most motorcycle locks are pretty simple, but very effective, while they are a challenge for most locksmiths, they are by no means our greatest challenge!

Charging a Dead Battery

Already running late for work, Ben walks out to his motorcycle and hits the starter button. Yet all he hears is the click on a solenoid. The bike won't start. Wearing his work clothes beneath his riding gear Ben begins pushing the bike down the street in the hopes of push starting the motorcycle to life. It worked, but if you're in a hurry and having trouble starting your motorcycle in the morning, start diagnosing the problem by checking out the battery.

Check to make sure the battery's connections are clean and good. If the connections are dirty, clean the connections by pouring soda pop over top the terminals and using steel wool or emery cloth to remove any corrosion that has built up and re-tighten the terminals. Next, follow the negative cable (black) from the battery to the bike's ground. Check this connection and if you are suspect, remove and clean up the ground with emery cloth and tighten. Next, check the battery for a sticker that says when the battery was first installed. The sticker will have a letter and a number. The letter corresponds to the month (A = January, B= February and so on) and the number is the year. If the battery is over five years old and/or the bike has been sitting for a while it's probably time to replace it but it doesn't hurt to try and resuscitate the battery. Start by putting a voltmeter on the terminals to read current voltage. A properly charged battery will have 12.6 volts or above. If your battery falls below this threshold it's time to recharge the battery.

Hold your battery up to a light source and check the battery's level of acid. If any of the six cells is low on acid top, pull the cap off that cell and top off the battery with water. Once the battery is full of fluids take it to a motorcycle shop or automotive supply store and ask the clerk to charge the battery at low amperage (less then 5 amps) for the day. Battery's will absorb more electrons when given a trickle charge over a long period of time versus a powerful but quick charge. Stores and shops will generally do this service to you for free. When the end of the day comes, go back to the store and ask that they test the battery in front of you. Ask them to look up the battery's minimum cranking amps in a booklet. Armed with this information you can tell the battery's voltage and hold long it can supply that voltage that way you know with relative certainty if your battery will work or if you need to start wearing your running shoes to work.

Second Chance to Ride a Can-Am Spyder

The really nice thing about motorcycles and other vehicles in general is that over time they continue to get better and better. Thus it is that just because you've ridden a particular machine once, that doesn't mean you don't want to ride one again, given the opportunity. So when my second opportunity to ride a Can-Am Spyder presented itself recently of course I jumped at the chance.

And you know what? I think they've improved it.

Of course, I'm not comparing apples to apples here so keep that in mind. What I rode before was the 2009 Spyder RS, which is just the basic machine. This time I rode the 2011 Spyder RT, the touring machine, that comes with luggage containers and a back-rest for the passenger. That extra mass could make a difference in handling. Or it could just be that I did a better job riding it because I had experience.

What's more likely, however, is that they've improved the Spyder, and I suspect the key factor is the new for 2010 Stability Control System (SCS). It's amazing what they can do with electronics. But let me describe what I'm talking about.

The Spyder is not a motorcycle. In fact, the Can-Am people take pains to tell you that. They call it a roadster. With two wheels in front and one in back, it steers like a car. You turn the handlebars to the right to go right, left to go left. No leaning like on a motorcycle. And like a car, as the Spyder turns right, centrifugal force wants to throw you to the left. In a car you're strapped into a full chair and you're not going anywhere, but on a Spyder you don't have that chair back to restrain you. What I found riding the RS was that I needed to brace myself on the rear-set foot pegs going into curves and then lean my body across the console. It was fine once I got used to it but it definitely took some getting used to.

Riding the RT was different. Sure, centrifugal force still wants to throw you to the opposite side--the laws of physics haven't changed--but it just didn't seem as powerful a force. Part of it may be that the "Ultra comfort touring saddle" on the RT is a bit deeper with a bit more lower back support, but I'm also thinking the SCS has something to do with it.

So how was the ride? It was good, and interesting, too. The RT I rode was a manual transmission model but you can also get them with semi-automatic, like a scooter, where you just twist the throttle. The 998cc V-twin engine makes good enough power that one guy I was riding with laid some rubber taking off from a stop one time. "Just an accident," he claimed. Sure. I know I've never had the urge to see what kind of power a machine has. Right.

On the road you really feel a lot more secure than you do riding a motorcycle. The Spyder is so much bigger that it has got to be more visible to other drivers. It kind of made me feel like I was riding in a Volkswagen Beetle with no covering. And sitting way up high like that, visibility was excellent.

With that big, broad seat, and no need to put your feet on the group when you come to a stop, the RT is definitely a ride-all-day bike (excuse me, roadster). The windshield is electrically adjustable and heated grips and cruise control are standard. Your passenger will be even more comfortable than you, with armrests and a cushioned backrest. The storage spaces fore and aft will swallow a huge amount of luggage, and there's even a trailer lock in case you need more luggage capacity. That's the basic RT. There are four versions of the RT, with an increasing array of standard features, so getting what you want is not an issue.

The Spyder is "riding reinvented," as Can-Am likes to say. Go take a test ride and answer that for yourself.
